New Zealand Trade Commissioner for Mexico, Jorge Argüelles, talks to The New Zealand Herald about the growing trading opportunities of the country in Mexico.
New Zealand companies have not traditionally thought of Mexico as a priority market. However, its booming middle-class should not be overlooked so quickly.
Jorge Argüelles, New Zealand's trade commissioner to the region says that "the bigger middle-class is creating a lot more opportunities for New Zealand in terms of consumers". There are currently 30 to 35 New Zealand companies operating in Mexico and the market is big enough to host many more.
A World Bank report showed 17 per cent of Mexico's 113 million people joined the middle class ranks between 2000 and 2010. A growing middle-class means more demand for high-protein products, of which New Zealand is a top producer, Arguelles said.
Mexican agricultural producers are open to innovative processes and products and there are opportunities around machinery and efficient technologies, he said. "It's well known that New Zealand is a world leader in terms of efficiency in agricultural production".
There are a lot more New Zealand companies trying to get into the mexican market and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise helps these enterprises create a solid business development.
New Zealand exports to Mexico were worth $363 million in the year to December 2010, making the country New Zealand's 24th biggest trading partner.

Australia has been elected to serve as a non-permanent member on the United Nations Security Council for 2013 and 2014.
193 members of the United Nations cast their votes in a secret ballot for the non- permanent seats on the Security Council. At the end of the voting Australia received 140 votes -more than enough to take victory in the first round. The Australian nation is now part of a powerful diplomatic elite, of which the nation hadn't been a part of for the past 27 years.
The Australians played down their chances but everyone who had promised their vote, delivered on it. The Caribbean nations, for example, stood behing Australia when casting their votes. As a block, they delivered 14 of their entitled 15 votes. The Caribbean is a close supporter of the nation and its iniciatives, such as Action Aid Australia, and like their responsiveness to the problems of small island States.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Foreign Minister Bob Carr thanked Australia's regional and global partners for the confidence they had shown in Australia and underlined that Australia would play a constructive role across the amplitude of the Council's peace and security agenda. Gillard and Carr also congratulated Luxembourg, South Korea, Argentina and Rwanda, the other four countries elected to serve as non-permanent members for 2013-14.
Some of Australia's key priorities while completing their two year term, beginnig the 1st of January of next year, will include Syria, discussions on the creation of a small arms treaty, nuclear disarmament and women and girls promotion in development countries.
Australia's appointment marks the reward of a long and strong promotion mission on behalf of its Foreign Policy's officials; it is certainly a great opportunity and succes for the nation.
"We are a nation that is a substantial contributer to the UN and it was more than time for us to return to the Security Council and to play a role over the next two years in shaping events that are truly important to our nation" -Prime Minister Julia Gillard

Mexico's lower house of Congress gave final approval on Saturday to a bill that would mark the biggest shake-up of the country's labor market in 42 years.
Mexico's lower house of Congress passed a long-awaited labor reform 28th of September, in the biggest effort in decades to provide new dynamism into the country's economy where a third of the labor force is employed informally.
Economists and investors welcomed the widely expected approval of the bill as a step in the right direction, saying it will boost Mexico's competitiveness and contribute to job creation and ultimately, economic growth.
A reconsideration of the current labor laws, which date back to 1970, has been on the table in Mexico for more than two decades, but only now has enough consensus emerged to make the changes with an agreement by the two biggest political parties in Congress, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), and the National Action Party (PAN).
The 500-member lower house voted 351-130 in favor of the bill, with 10 abstentions. The PRI and PAN, and smaller Green Party voted in favor, while the leftist parties led by the Party of Democratic Revolution, or PRD, opposed it.
New rules proposed by outgoing President Felipe Calderón will make it easier and cheaper for firms to hire and fire, create new types of temporary employment contracts which require no compensation when they expire, contracts involving payment by the hour, and the regulation of outsourcing practices. President Calderón said the labor reform could add 400,000 jobs per year.
Now, the Senate has to pass the reform before late October for it to be signed into law, but that's expected to be a formality that shouldn't bring major changes, lawmakers said.
Mexico's unemployment rate stood at 5.4% in August, but around 29% of the labor force works in the informal economy, such as home-based, unregistered businesses and activities.
Mr Tim George has been announced as the next Australian Ambassador to Mexico.
Foreign Minister Bob Carr has recently announced the appointment of Mr Tim George as Australia's new Ambassador to Mexico.
Mr George will start his appointment in December 2012, and will also have non-resident accreditation to Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic.
Mr George holds a senior position with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and has previously acted as Australia's High Commissioner to Pakistan.
